Diet food can mean different things to different people. To some it means special bars and drinks, while to others it means specific measuring, chopping, and cooking. The usual definition is a type of food which has altered to remove calories, sugar, or fat from it to make it suitable for use by a person trying to lose weight. Sometimes diet food is marked as light, fat-free, sugar-free, low-calorie, low-fat, or low-carbohydrate.
A diet food usually contains a substitute for a fattening or high-caloric ingredient. For example, the sugar in diet soda has been replaced with a sugar substitute such as Splenda or Nutrasweet. Some types of potato chips are baked instead of fried to reduce fat content.
Some diet plans, such as Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, and MediFast, provide special balanced meals to be purchased by dieters. These systems offer multiple choices for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Dieters order several weeks’ worth of diet food which is then shipped to their homes. The dieter adds fruit or salad to the pre-packaged meals. In some parts of the country dieters can order gourmet diet food from Chef’s Diet, which will be delivered on a daily basis to their homes. Many celebrities take advantage of this service.
Diet food can also include liquids and bars, such as Slim-Fast or Benefit shakes and bars. Other companies make energy bars or protein bars and package them as diet food. These shakes and bars are constituted to contain vitamins, minerals, and fiber to promote feelings of fullness and boosts of energy.
Natural foods are considered the best form of diet food. Foods, such as vegetables raised without pesticides, meats from grazed cattle or free-range chicken, fish caught in the wild or fed what wild fish would eat, are all considered natural foods.
